| THEY'RE AFTER Your MONEY ...No.5 Old-Tricks May Be Used On Veterans Seeking Jobs
(Last of a Serles)
By ALBERT FANCHER Scripps-Howard Special Writer NEW YORK, Dec. 10.—Millions of servicemen will want jobs after ; the war, and millions of civilians will want to change from war work to peacetime jobs. . Some authorities are wondering how many will get jobs, and how many will get gypped. For confidence men are watching developments, 8hrewd students of popular psychology, they specialize in offering people what | they want most. District Attorney Frank S. Hogan of New York county ls one who believes that a big revival of the job-selling racket is a “dis tinct possibility.” » » ” THIS CRUEL racket not only steals the victim's money but | lowers his morals at the very time | he needs all he has of both. Here are some ways the racket
works: A veteran wants a civil service position offering security as well as permanency. Apparently by accident, he encounters a suave and convincing individual who says he has an “in"—that he can get around the red tape, put the veteran on a preferred list, and ‘even guarantee

his appointment, probably to -a better place than he expected. But this will take money, usually just as much as the swindler thinks his victim will pay. If the vetéran pays the fee, that is the last he sees of the confi-
dence man, or the cash, He's been taken, ‘ o o ” THESE = operators frequently

man, helps to clinch the deal, The swindler of another type | doesn't even need that, He knows the personnel director of a big corporation, so he says. “We're just like that, we're so close,” he tells his victim, “Say the word | and I'll get you a fine job with that company.” : Using his knowledge of the veteran's experience and background, | he visualizes an ideal position
IF THE veteran is reluctant to part with the $50, $100 or more that is asked, the demonstration method is used. The veteran {s told to call on the personnel director. He does, and is surprised to find that the executive <jknows nothing “about him. And-he is disappointed that no Job is offered. The swindler has anticipated that. It's part of his plot. He takes his victim to the office building + that noon, at lunch time. When the personnel man emerges, the swindler steps up to him, says something, nods his head and returns, “It's in the bag,” he says, confidently. “Just like I told you.” And the victim, impressed by this trick, often pays the fee—only to find later that the personnel director, quite honestly, still knows nothing about him,
| | | { { | | | |
A 4 THE TEAM method, however, usually is more effective, The desk man can play any role, from “office manager” to “president” of a company. All he does in fact is answer the phone in his
. | “otfice,” usually a fly-by-night
desk space arrangement, and feed the victim reassurances about the Job he hopes to get. Many servicemen and war workers won't want to go back to the places where they lived before the war, hoping for better opportunities elsewhere; All the better for the racketeer, say the authorities. For he can sell any kind of a job in any part of the country, or even abroad,
n » a
LETTERS on impressive business stationery, “signed” by an “officer” of the company that is supposed to have a job to be filled, faked telegrams, spurious contracts for employment—these are only part of the swindler's bag of tricks. If the prospect falls for the racket, he wastes time as well as cash, When he gets to the city whexe thé job is supposed to be, he finds his new employer never heard of him, or of the man who promised him the place. There may even be no such company as he: has been told about. The swindler can invent corporations as readily as he can Jobs at fancy salaries. He can promise ground-floor opportunities in television, plastics, electronics, light metals, wood processing, aviation, housing and other alluring post-war fields.

MANY veterans and war worke ers will have money, for a while, They will be eager for permanent, peacetime positions. They may be willing to pay the price racket eers may ask for “helping” them, If employers and legitimate Job-finding agencies are slow in placing veterans and workers, if men and women are shunted from one bureau or employment office to another, if competition is as keen as some observers exe pect, the stage will be set for the revival of job-selling rackets on a gigantic and heartbreaking scale,
