their way into two of three buildings housing political offenders at Averon prison today as fierce fighting flared again in Athens. Meanwhile, British-manned tanks and Greek infantry fought their way into the vicinity of the prison. They sought to prevent the E. L. A. S. forces from over-running the small prison-defense unit and capturing some 920 inmates held in protective custody, It was believed the leftist E. L. A. S. troops ‘might free some of the! political prisoners and kill others.

Ex-Premier Included

The inmates include former Prime Minister John Rallis, his cabinet, a number of women and two, babies born in the prison during the last two weeks. The British earlier captured four rebel strong points in central and southern Athens, clearing the road to Piraeus against slight opposition, but the E. L. A. S. appeared to be forcing a crisis around the political prison. In their first: attack, the E. L. A. 8. ‘sprayed the prison compound with’ machine gun fire from a window in an adjacent hospital building. Then they dynamited a hole in the prison wall around the compound. British paratroopers beinmates from the women's building. The outnumbered defenders turned rifles and machine guns on the blown part of the wall, but further dynamite blasts tore out other chunks of the wall and E. L. A. 8. forces streamed in.
