DRIVE FOR BASES ~ NEARER JAPANH

Volcano -and. Bonin Islands Being Softened Up By Bombers. .

WASHINGTON, ,Dec. 14. — The|

increasing frequency of American air raids on Japan's Volcano and Bonin islands indicated today that the process of softening them up— or neutralizing them in preparation for future operations is now underway. These islands guard the sea approach to the enemy homeland. Bases in either or both of these island groups would prove extremely useful dor extension of American strategic bombing against Japan's war industries, . At present, the nearest American strategic bombing base is at Saipan, approximately , 1500 statute * miles southeast of Tokyo. This is a long haul even for big, long-range J | planes. by 715 Miles From Tokyo Iwo Jima, main objective of Americgn air and sea forces during

the last week's operations against the Volcano islands, is about 775

statute miles . southeast of Tokyo. It is about 700 miles northwest of Saipan. | If that island were in American hands. it would reduce by almost half the distance the big superfortressés would have to travel to hit| the Japanese capital. This would permit the carrying of more destructive bomb loads and allow more time over the target areas. The Bonins, which were settled by a small group of Americans about a century ago and.were later colonized by the .Japanese, would prove even more . useful. Chichi Jima, one of the more important islands and also a frequent target of American bombers, is only 632 miles southeast of Tokyo. It is 862 miles northwest of Saipan.

Aim at Jap Base

Whether the United States is yet ready to seize those enemy bases is a matter of conjecture. They ‘are so close Yo the Japanese homeland that American operations from them mighit be subject to a good deal of interference. In any event, it nowvappears necessary to neutralize them because of their proximity to the B-29 base on Saipan. Japanese bombers have struck at | the Saipan base several times. The enemy bombers are incapable of flying non-stop from Japan and return, indicating that Iwo Jima is being used as an intermediary base. Thus, the neutralization or seizure of Iwo Jima would ‘appear to be the only logical way of halting Japanese attacks on Saipan. atever the choice may be is something that cannot be determined here. But the recent raids make it clear gomething is being done,
