| French Scientists Hide Stock Of Serum and Secretly
Produce More.
By ROSETTE HARGROVE NEA Staff Writer PARIS, Dec. 14.—There is one organization in Paris which today can declare with justifiable pride: *We have need of nothing.” This is the world-famous Pasteur institute. The tale of its struggles against | "restrictions and shortages, plus the | necessity of carrying on its work secretly, in defiance of the Nazis, reads like an epic. A For months before D-day, according to Director Monsieur Trefouel, the institute, on its own inftiative and without any official help or guidance, decided to place in hiding stores of vaccines and seérums in anticipation of epidemics which almost automatically follow in the wake of war,
Caches Well Scattered SThis work had to be carried on | eptitiously. The precious phials placed in “caches” all over the | ntry, but especially along the

wk four long years the institute anaged to keep going in spite of | he Germans’ systematic refusal. of | Wery application for raw material. “Diphtheria t o x1 n production Jumped from 4180 quarts in 1932 to 28,000 in 1944. This increase, incidentally, was maintained for nearly all other . serums and vaccines. This alone, _ declared the director, bordered on the miraculous,
> Need Becomes Greater
The Pasteur institute's determipation to step up its peacetime production was motivated by the steady . tise in demand. As the war dragged on the num_ber of sick people steadily rose, mainly owing to undernourishment, Compulsory vaccinations and the
to hoard medical suppiies did the rest. From time to time there was con- © siderable difficulty in meeting re- ~ quirements of the public. When the Germans decided they ‘wanted to take over the production of anti-typhus vaccine in 1942, the

alley When communications were disrupted, due mainly to sllied bombings, diphtheria anti-toxins were ufactured at. Marseilles and rdeaux as well paris.
Horses Become Scarée
The problem of securing animals was a serious one. Horses provide an important supply of serum. When hofses became scarce and hard to find, they were bought on the black market for 40,000 francs ($800) a head. Chiselling, fooling the Germans, dealing in the black market — all this had to be done in order to secure and care for the chickens, rabbits, pigs, sheep, birds, oxen, snakes, mice and guinea pigs needed for the production of the serums. No subsidy was asked for and the price of the serums was never increased. To keep up their supply the institute used every month 8000 mice and guinea pigs each, plus 1000 rabbits, The stables had to hold no less than 800 horses. In case the water supply ran short an old disused well in the courtyard was restored. Old machinery for power and current was repaired
