NEW YORK, Dec. 14 (U. RP.) — . Today was the day the Friendship -¢lub Hoped would never come, It was nine months ago that five Brooklyn boys at Camp Upton aN. Y. told each other that they'd “stick together—no matter what.” A month later, at Tent City, Fla., where they had become army air force ground crew trainees, 15 more soldiers had joined them. « They picked out their rings— of silver rope, and worn on the third finger, left hand—in - St. Petersburg, Fla. one of the boys

—a minister from Kenosha, Wis. —saw them in -a window and everyone bought one.

They vowed that if any of them died, his ring would go to the oldest member of the group , .. and finally, that all 20 rings would be buried with the last survivor, When they graduated from the ground school at Denver, Colo., they were separated, Six of theni were sent oyerseas: The one who wanted to be a doctor, Chuck, whom they called “Baby” because he was so young; Cliff, a Des. pianist; Al, a Georgia ‘Tech athlete; Orval, who said he had never worn shoes at home in Kentucky, and Joe Schiff, the banker's son. “I can't tell you the last names of the other guys,” Lester Hart, now discharged, said in relating the story. “The rest of the boys don't know what's happened yet. You see,’ I'm the oldest, I'm, 28. And that’s why I'm going to get the first ring. Joe's ring. He was killed in Italy. I want them to hear the news from me. I don't think we ever thought it could

‘really happen—we "hoped this

day would never come.”
