Mr. Lautenschlager lectured and preached in three provinces of Northwest China which included Communist territory and headquarters, He says preaching was not only welcomed by Communist leaders but they invited the preaching team to return to the area, build : church and inaugurate a YM C. A. On this speaking tour, the Rev. Mr. Lautenschlager rode horseback for eight days, flew hundreds of miles and visited large cities housed entirely in caves. He crossed the Yellow river to within a few miles of occupied territory, where he addressed more Shan's and military leaders. He visited scores of new industrial co-operatives which many re-

The state public welfare board yesterday joined with other groups in expressing qpposition to most of the recommandpeions made by the welfare investigative committee in its recent report. The state board hit particularly at the proposal to create a three-meém-ber, full-time board, terming it “obviously unsound.” Other groups which have released statements opposing most of the report include the Indiana League of Women Voters, the Merit System league and the Central Labor union of Marion county.

Later, although his official station was Tsinan in Shantung province as a member 6f the Cheeloo faculty, he moved with the university into the interior. He divided his time between teaching and preaching to high school and college youth of Free China.

‘Overwhelming’ Success

The success of this evangelistic effort is reported af “overwhelming.” In 17 Christian high schools visited, nearly 3000 students made decisions to becomes Christians, better Christians or to study Christianity. In four war years, more than 6000 students made similar decisions in meetings conducted by the missionary and the Chinese Christians who formed his team. In one Chinese city, the Rev. Mr. Lautenschlager spoke more than 25 times in five days. Just before leaving China for his furlough year in the spring of 1941, he wrote a circular letter to all the 3000 students who had “made decisions” in West China in his meetings during the: last two years.

Huntington ‘Graduate

The Rev. Mr. Lautenschlager is a Canadian, a graduate of Waterloo Collegiate institute, Ontario, and of Huntington college, Huntington, Ind. He also holds a master's degree from the University of Michigan and before going to the Orient he served as a pastor in Canada and afterward taught at Huntington college. -He has written magazine articles on the war in China as well as China's Northwest and on student evangelism. He will speak to Presbyterian men of Johnson and neighboring counties Thursday evening at Greenwood. The next evening, at the Second church, of which Dr. Jean 8. Milner is the pastor, Leroy George Gordner will preside as dinner chairman. It is hoped that the {dinner will be the beginning of a series of such meetings for men, Presbyterian officials said today.
