Fur Designer Gives Advice On Coat Care
BY ALICIA HART NEA stalt Writer GIVE THE NEW fur coat, that makes you look like a million now, its beauty care and fit will be as flattering next year and the year after, Guarding the back of the collar and waistline closings—two worst points of friction—by wearing a scarf inside your coat, and making sure that proper fastenings eliminate the need for clutching, is first rule of care given you by Esther Dorothy, a designer who knows as much about furs as a jeweler does shout gems. Prom Miss Dorothy comes these summed-up pointers: Don’t wear your coat away at a strategic spot by sitting on it. Lift it up or take it off. Don’t leave arms in gleeves indoors, because perspiration is harmful to furs. Shake coat after every wearing.
If it gets wet, shake and hang up
to dry—without stroking it— Where it's safe from heat and obJects that might touch and mat its hairs. sg 8» . GIRLS WHO dab or spray per= fume on their furs should know what they are up to. There are, for instance, perfumes or light floral odors which are utterly lost on furs. Because of the residue of animal fats which pelts naturally have, some perfumes suffer unpleasant distortions when applied to furs. So, it's a good idea to test out the compatibility of your muskrat or mink with your perfume be-

A Half Billion Beauty Bill
American women spend 594 million dollars a year on cosmetics and toilet preparations. Almost 65 million dollars were spent for perfumes and toilet waters in this country in 1943. One hundred and 20 million lipsticks were sold in 1942 and even more in 1943 and 1944. ‘The average woman spends $2.37 a month on cosmetics. Sixty-seven, per cent of women war workers consider face creams most vital to their appearance, face powder next, and lipstick third. Forty-eight per cent of the women who buy perfumes are said by one authority to be influenced chiefly by scent; 45 per cent by the ate traction of bottle and package; seven per cent by price. Seventy per cent are inclined to add to pet perfumes certain unfamiliar scents about which they have read; 15 per cent change brands often; 15 per cent rarely do.

Children Learn Through Play With Toys
By JANE STAFFORD Science Service Staff Writer
MANY ‘OF YOU looking for Christmas’ gifts for the children this year have been disappointed at not finding the many clever mechanical toys which used to fill the counters. You need not be. The mechanical toys usually gave more pleasure to the grown-ups than to the children, especially the very young ones who did not know how to play with such toys by themselves. Children learn much from their toys. Baby learns from his rattle how to hold things. Blocks, a string of spools, clothespins, washable animals and dolls teach him about different colors and shapes and the different feels of things, the U. 8. children’s bureau reminds us.
AFTER HIS first birthday he takes an increasing interest in things around the house and for the next two or three years will have a good time playing with pots and pans, boxes with covers to open and shut, drawers to open and close, a chair that he can push around or a box to climb on. It may not be your idea of a Christmas present, but a smooth board makes a good toy for children from three to five years old. They can use it as a seesaw, or put one end on a box or the steps and use it as a slide. They can put it across two low boxes and learn to balance themselves as they walk along it. » » . BLOCKS , FOR. building towers, houses, tracks and dozens of other things the child's imagination suggests are fine for children from one to five years. Get small blocks for the small children and larger ones for the older children, Crayons and soft pencils with paper to scribble on will appeal even to quite young children. A pair of scissors with round ends will give a child many happy hours and increase his manual skill as he cuts pictures from old magazines and newspapers. Remember to look for sturdy toys that do not get out of order or break easily and for the smaller children, toys, animals dnd dolls that can be washed or cleaned easily.

Cleaning Cloths
Need Care
Dust cloths and cleaning cloths, even though they are made of fabrics useless ‘for other purposes, should be treated so as to last as long as possible, If they are put to. soak in a pail of cool, slightly soapy water and left standing for an hour or so, most of the heavy soil will loosen up without much washing effort, If there isn't time to wash them completely,: give them a rinse in clear water and hang them to dry. They can then be laundered at the tag end of the family wash on regular wash day. .
