TAX GROUP EYES 36-MILLION FUND
Association to Fight Any Move to ‘Waste’ State's General Balance.
The Indiana Taxpayers’ associa~ tion will keep a watchful eye on the $36,000,000 general und balance that will be in the state treasury on Jan. 1 and will fight any tendency on the part of the’ legislature to waste it, Albert H. Cole of. Peru,
association president, said today. In a report on property tax totals released at a meeting of the association’s board of directors here, Mr, Cole said that various schemes for using this balance are in the ofing. “We recognize,” he said, “that there must be some adjustments made in salaries paid to state employees, some institutions must have relief and other emergency matters that will come before the assembly will merit public support, Urges Economy “However, we ought to approach the session with economy in mind. Federal spending must continue at a high level because the war has to be won, regardless of the cost, The only place where government may effect any immediate savings is on the home front and we as taxpayers must protect the public interest by standing firmly against waste and extravagance.” Mr. Cole reported that state property owners this year will pay $2,328,000 more in taxes than last year, He said that the taxpayers’ association had succeeded in getting $6,608,000 whittled off the requested budgets, The report showed that 61 counties had boosted their property tax rates while 31 had reduced theirs.
