Soviet Lieutenants

In the citation signed by Soviet | President Makhail I. Kalinin award[ing the honor to the two French{men, however, both were listed merely as Soviet first lieutenants. The marquis, Reland de la Poype, served in the French army early in 1839 as a non-commissioned officer. After Dunkerque he escaped with {Gen. de Gaulle to England where he received his training as a pilot. When the Normandy squadron was organized in the fall of 1942 he came to the Soviet Union where he saw his first combat in the spring of 1943, His father was killed in the second battle of the Somme in 1940, and his mother later died under the German occupation. Marcel Albert, the worker's son, shot down 23 &erman planes in battle. He is the only surviving

evitably known as the “Three Musketeers” who vowed to fight as one until the end.

Came to Russia Together

All three came to the Soviet Union together and saw their first aerial combats on the same day. Albert's friends, Duran, and le Fevre, however, were not so lucky as he and have since been lost in action, Albert, as leading ace of the Normandy squadron, has been decorated by the Soviet government twice before. In addition to being a hero of the Soviet Union, he is also the holder of the order of the patriotic war, second class, and of the order of the Red banner, . De-la Poype, who has been rewarded by his own government with the legion of honor, is also a holder of the order of the Red banner. Both men have seen action in the skies above Orel and Smolensk, and more recently have been fighting over East Prussia,
