Self-Reliant With Arti-

ficial Limbs.

By KERMIT McFARLAND Scripps-Howard Staff Writer

ATLANTA, Nov,

typicals signs of the holiday, it

was very much like the routine day 'o ;

at this particular institution.

The menu included the customary . 0.

THE MAIMED EAT) TURKEY AND PIE

Convalescent Veterans Ace! 8

24.~They observed Thanksgiving Day yesterday | at one of the army's general hos- | pitals here but except for a few,

|

turkey, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Several hundred of the 2000 eonvalescing - men at this hospital—|

Lawson General—were absent, either at their homes, if they nearby, or as guests of the hospitable Atlantans.

were | 43

And in one mess hall the men |

had a dozen touring newspapermen and women as guests, Some of the dally physical ex-| ercises were suspended. But the business of the hospital went on| much as usual, | |

Carves Turkey One-Handed

Doctors and nurses were as busy | as ever, In the mess hail in which the reporters were guests, Pfc, Albert Lopresto of Steubenville, O., carved the turkey. Lopresto's right hand | had been amputated but he did al first class carving job with the ald of his new hook, All of the men who ate in this mess hall were amputation cases, some. with missing arms, some with one or both legs missing. They came from their wards, | single file, into the mess hall, which | seated about 200, ate their turkey |

with evident relish and then went|

back to the wards for a_rest. Others, breaking in. new artifielal limbs—which the doctors call protheses—were buoyantly cheerful.

Men BSelf-Reliant

The remarkable part of this was that the men with empty sleeves, or those who had just acquired artificial hands, custom-built for each individual, were exceptionally self-reliant as they passed around the heavy platters and dishes and made use of their dinnerware. Most of them were conversation~ al, fully agreeable to talking about their progress and relating the story of their injuries. But all of them seemed ‘to have

one idea upper-most in mind. It|"

wasn't their guests, or how soon they would be equipped with protheses, but whether or not they would get home for Christmas, As for the guests, their main

thought was something like this:|g

“Damn me, if I don't go home and give more blood, buy more bonds and work harder.”
