Morale at New Low

In the Baden countryside there is a general flight for safety with morale at an all-time low. Members of the Gestapo are doffing uniforms and badges and adopting civilian attire. Railroad officials at the Baden station in Basel, which is the terminus for trains to Germany, arrive late and in isolated groups— when they arrive at all—since there is. no longer communication between Baden's suburbs and Basel. Wehrmacht troops complain of poor materiel and food. To discourage desertion and surrender to the enemy becoming daily more widespread, the Volkssturmers have been told that the Russians, British and Americans cut off the legs and arms of every living German soldier falling into their hands, in revenge for acts committed by the retreating German army. anonymous letters threatening them and their families with death. Mysterious pictures showing S. S. (elite guard) crematoriums.in eastern prison camps and the destruc tion and torture carried out by the gestapo in France, Belgium and Holland before and during the retreat are said to be circulating in Cont, Nobody Knows where they come from but they are turning up on the desks of party members.
