His company was pressing up the northeast coast and had killed Japs by the huridreds when, before they fully realized it, their right flank: was snowed under, Three machine guns were put out of commission by enemy grenades. Then Sgt. Boyd went into action, He seized one of ‘the heavy, water cooled machine guns in his hands and made a 150-yard dash under enemy mortar and machine gun fire. Three times he fell to his knees as he stumbled in the darkness, but he made it to the extreme right flank, dropped the gun into place and started firing away.
Commander Counts Toll
The next morning the company commander counted 83 dead Japs in the arc before Sgt. Boyd's weapon, Some of them were only three feet away from the gun’s snout. Nobody knows how many Japs he killed on Tarawa, But it's a safe bet the Japs suffered under his fire there for Sgt. Boyd had a score to settle with:them for Guadalcanal, It was on Guadalcanal a Jap bul-
