O'BRIEN LAUDS RECORD OF FDR

Senate Candidate Declares ‘Administration Saved Nation From Chaos.

Times Special LAWRENCEBURG, Oct. 31.— Cornelius O'Brien, Democratic nominee for the short U. S. senate term, declared in a speech here last night that the Democratic party has been “the party of plan and action in American history.” He said the Roosevelt administration saved the nation from. chaos and as a result of its acts many businesses which were failing in 1932 are today, solvent and buying government bohds. “In Indiana,” he said, “the Democratic party has shown the same ability to act. As a result of Governor McNutt’s program and the economical administration of Governors Townsend and Schricker, a state deficit of seven millions has been turned into a balance of $43,000,000. “So far as I know,” he continued, “no Republican candidate—either in state or nation—is favoring the repeal of a single Democratic law of the past 12 years.” Mr. O'Brien, a Lawrenceburg businessman, said this was no time to change national administrations. “You don’t change firemen,” he

Schricker Reiterates Stand on Peace Plan

Times Special

EAST CHICAGO, Oct. 31.—Governor Schricker ended a day .of campaigning in Lake county yesterday by declaring in a speech here last night that “we must not permit the foundation for a third world war to be laid at the coming peace conference.” “If we are big enough, and strong enough to do all of the things we have accomplished toward winning this war, then certainly we have the capacity ior enforcing th® provisions of an international agreement to

§ preserve the peace,” he said.

“I have said that if I am elected I will support the President, whoever he may be, in an effort to write a peace that will prevent a third world war. I will, if sent to Washington, insist that the ideals

are fighting today shall not be betrayed.” The governor warned -labar “to

Little Jimmie Reuss, 750 N. Luett st, is really ready to scare his neighborhood come Halloween. But if the neighbors are ready for the usual run of pranks and tricks they are in for a surprise. For Jimmie this year will have a grumpkin-o-lantern. Here he picks it off the vine. And while it bears a strange resemblance to a pumpkin we assure you that is not the case. It looks like one picked off a grape vine, Therefore it is a grumpkin. But then we introduced a new species of James Whitcomb Riley's favorite fruit a short time ago. Then it was a pummulberry. Remember?

REPUBLICAN CAMPAIGN— Halleck Compares Records Of Truman and Bricker

Times Special LOGANSPORT, Oct. 31.—If the coming election were to be decided solely upon the abilities of the jmo vice presidential nominees, Governor Bricker and Senator Truman, the Republicans “should win in a walk,” Congressman Charles A. Halleck declared in a campaign address here

last night.

“Strange as it may seem, perhaps this is ihe v very issue on which

the election should be decided,” he said. “It is not beyond a possibility that, a few months hence, one of these men will be President. “In Senator Truman, Sidney Hillman found a direct opposite of Bricker. Both served in the world war. There all similarity ends. Bricker left the service to become a highly successful lawyer and attain a national legal reputation. Truman, like his running mate, Roosevelt, was a bust in private business.”

Cities Their Records

Mr. Halleck said that Mr. Bricker’s attainments as a lawyer caused the public to draft him for public office while Mr. Truman was put in the U. 8. senate by “the corrupt Pendergast machine.” He said that Mr. Bricker “performed brilliantly” as governor of Ohio, that Mr. Truman's record in the senate was “mediocre” and that his hardest fight was “to prevent the confirmation of the U.S. district attorney who convicted his sponsor, Boss Pendergast, and sent him to prison.” Speaking on the same platform with Mr. Halleck, Senatorial Nominee Homer E. Capehart enumerated a number of reasons why he believed Governor Dewey should be elected President. Mr. Capehart’s speech at Batesville tonight will be broad cast over station WLW from 9 to 9:30 p. m.

Emmert Attacks Schricker Role

Times Special | AUBURN, Oct. 31. —Atforney General James A. Emmert, Republican nominee for re-election, charged in a campaign address here last night that Governor Schricker, the Democratic senatorial nominee, is playing “button-button-who’s got the button.”

: Influx of Injured Veterans

“Last winter,” said Mr. Emmert, “the governor was talking about the long-haired boys in Washington. Then a few months later he indorsed Roosevelt for a fourth term. “At South Bend, newspapermen say the governor said he didn't want to be elected if Mr. Roosevelt were defeated. Then the next day Candidate Schricker denied that statement. No one knows where the button is right now, and Henry won't tell.”

Gates Repeats Pledge

Times Special GARY, Oct. 31.—G. O. P. gubernatorial nominee Ralph Gates here last night repeated his pledge to eliminate political eontrol from state departments under jurisdiction of the governor, if he is elected. Mr, Gates, accompanied by his wife, is making a three-day tour of the Calumet region. He predicted that Governor Dewey will sweep Indiana in the coming election and that the entire Republican state ticket will be elected.

James Speaks At Acton

Times Special CTON, Oct. 31.—State Auditor Richard T. James, Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, charged here last night that the New Deal is claiming that its party is winning the war. “This is a tricky and futile effort to gain votes,” Mr. James said. “All Americans, whether they are Republicans, Democrats or New Dealers, are devoted to the war effort and ending the war just as quickly as possible.”

“Above all we do not want to send a representative to Washington this time who believes that by going along with the boys and being a good fellow he can perpetuate himself in office,” he said.

Attacks New Deal

Judge White said this district needs a congressman whose sense of duty is so great that he will have due regard for the rights of the people in every congressional district in every state. “We want a man who will fight for the constitutional rights of the people in the 11th district and we want him to do this without giving a single thought to his political future,” he said. “Judge Stark is eminently qualifiled to serve this district in congress,” he said. “I can recommend him as a person who has faith in the system of free enterprise, He does not subscribe to the New Deal system of robbing the treasury of the United States to create false prosperity.”
