Jones, president of Fiske university, willy speak on “William Penn” at morning worship tomorrow. Last night, the church presented the moving picture, “Courageous Mr. Penn,” as its tercentenary celebration.
Press Discusses Problem
The religious press has given con~ siderable space recently to the matter of peace-time conscription and reaction of the churches to e legislation dealing with The Methodist general confernoe, the Northern Baptist con- _ wention, the general assembly of the Presbyterian church in the U. 8. A, the general synod of the Evangeliand Reformed church and the anual ‘conference of the Church the Brethren all have turned thumbs down on a war-time decision for peace-time conscription, Likewise, the board of directors of the . United Council of Churchwomen has sent written protest to Wash‘ington concerning such legislation. Attacks Conscription
1bcal Quakers call peace-time conscription a “momentous departure ~{n the American way of life, not in keeping with the principles of democracy.” Most ‘of them feel that such legislation .would be of very serious consequence to Friends. Accordingly, at Earlham college, Richmond, 300 delegates gathered from all parts of the United States next week will discuss the attitude of Quakers toward peace-time conscription; how they will attempt to influence the legislation when it comes up in the congress; and what|g ' Quakers will do if such a law is Dr. Henry Cadbury of Harvard university is president of the American Friends Service committee end Clarence Pickett of 1 Philadelphia, executive secretary. Tells of Penn's Beliefs
“In the spirit of Wililam Penn and with his 300th anniversary vividly in mind the Richmond detiberations will go forward,” the Rev. Mr. Huffman said. Penn, it will be recalled was born to the English nobility, espoused Quaker opposition to his father and came ‘fo America to found the colony of * Pennsylvania. He stood for re- _ ligious liberty and fair dealing with _ the Indians and all races and creeds. Jefferson said of him that he was the greatest lawgiver of all time. His vision demanded the union of. the American colonies 100 years before it happened, as well as a federation of all the nations of the world including that of the “infidel Turks,” Overseas relief and grave prob{ems in the United States such as industrial unrest and racial antagonism claim the attention of the American Friends Service committee. Its expressed purpose is “to create the kind of world that should grow out of a Christian faith—a world in which men, women and children can live in peace, security and self-respect and in friendly accord with one another regardless of racial, religious or political differences.”

Let us search and try our ways and turn again to the Lord” Lam. 3:30,40. e lesson-sermon also includes the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy: «passions and appetites must end in pain. They are ‘of few days, and full of trouble Their supposed days are cheats. Their narrow limits belittle their gratifications, and hedge about their achievements with thorns.
