visit, and was visited by a former
student. When she did not rece ognize him, the former pupil teased, “Well, who was the worst boy you ever had in class?” After a moment's hesitation,

Cassady’s tricks which gave his schoolboys a Tom Sawyer flavor. Miss Milligan suspected him of using a Latin pony and was pleasantly ed when he voluntarily came to her and confessed. The teacher said he explained he had been guilty, but was con«¥ science-stricken and wanted to give the pony to her. Only years later did she learn that he had made an even better pony and decided to get rid of the old one and allay her suspicions at the same time. ” » #

that we had reached a solution of the problems,” he said. “It certainly was not for want of trying. I am quite sure, however, that we have got a great deal nearer fo it. I hope that Mikolajeys (Prime Minister Stanislaw Mikolajeyzk) will soon return to Moscow and it will be a great disappointment to ail sincere friends of Poland if a good arrangement cannot be made which will enable him to form a Polish government on Polish soil—a government recognized by all the great powers concerned and indeed by all those governments of the united nations which now recognize only the Polish government in London.” Mr, Churchill said that .Prance would now resume “her rightful historic role upoh the world stage” and that “France can by no means be excluded from discussions of the principal allies dealing with the problem of the Rhine and the fate of Germany.”
WATCHMAN REPORTS FIRING AT PROWLER
Richard Owens, 76, of 960 N. Delaware st., night watchman at a car sales lot at 1145 N. Meridian st., reported to police that early to-
day he fired two shots at a prowler|
and that he thinks one of the bullets hit a fleeing man. He said he saw a man crouching behind one of the cars and that when he asked him what hes was doing there he got up and ran. “I fired at him and he kept running and when I fired the second shot the man screamed but kept running and escaped,” he said.

Mr. Churchill said the allies believed they were on the “last lap” of the European war, but warned that “this is a race in which failure to exert the fullest effort to the end may protract that end.” “The present stage of the war is dour and hard,’ he said, “and fighting must be expected on all fronts to increase in scale and intensity.”
