1 Holds While Crew Bails - Out.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 (U,P.).—~

The story of pt. Don Barfield, a 15th airforce pilot who gave his life so the nine in his blazing

§ B-24 could te to safety was .} told today by the members of his crew in a war department anpouncement. The crew recently returned from an internment camp in Romania. On a bombing mission to Bucharest, Capt. Barfield eluded enemy fighters who who were shooting at the crippled bomber and dove into the clouds at 8000 feet with both engines afire, the crew members said, At 800 feet, he pulled the plane out of its dive and gave the signal '¢ for his men to jump: They bailed out safely while the captain held the plane on an even keel. : Barfield released the controls and i the plane went into a deep dive. By { the time he reached the bomb bay to bail out, thé careening Liberator was less than 200 feet above ground and it was too late for him to jump. Members of the crew were taken prisoner and interned in Romania until September, when they were returned to the United States. Capt. Barfield’s wife, Mrs. Aline Barfield, and their two children live at Albany, Ga. ;
