'An American Romance’ Has Dramatic Force.
In producing “An American Romance,” M-G-M donned long pants, sat down hand in chin to do some serjpus thinking, and came rd with a powerful, adult dramatization of this nation’s cultural development. It's effective and powerful because, ureeling for lengthy three~ hour periods at Loew's this week, it Jpresents a pretty good idea of why America is the complex, argufying, two-fisted giant of many political and economic cross-currents it is| today. It's all done gracefully and ten=derly with a minimum of brassy, stilted speechifying about the Amer= jean heritage, freedom and rights. Rather, these privileges are subtly incorporated. in the film's fast moving continuity. Thus, the po-} : i tent flavor of the real America, th A ATS rolling along massively under all {3 AN the high-sounding phrases one usually. associates with similar Hollywood effects, is deeply felt rather than actually defined in so many words. Because the history of this nation is largely the history of industrial sweat and genius the picture portrays the career of Steve

All in all, the opus gives a pretty good explanation of why, despite our prevailing cynicism, the Horatio Alger myth continues to recur in our national life. And unlike the average rags to riches fable it also tackles the current modification of that myth in-the light of our extensive, mass-production economy. Oh yes, the whole business is in technicolor. Authentic shots of mining, steel finishing and automotive fabrication add to the realism.

Lively Bill At Keith's
Boards a Pounding.
The stage of Keith's theater takes a five-act beating this week. Stomping jitterbugs and a fourhorsepower steeplechase are ' included in a vitamin-packed revue. The show opened yesterday and will continue through’ Sunday if the boards hold out. A pair of lightning-footed tapdancers, Rolla Pickert and his partner, Verna, start the proceedings. They conclude their stint with a hep-cat specialty on stilts. After an interim of songs and repartee, the stage gets another going over from Gautier’s Steeplechase. Gautier’s. four ponies, four dogs and clown monkey go through their paces with the skill of veteran troupers. John Alda m. cs and sings two “Showboat” hits. Hal Stone and Nina Kay go through a dullish comedy skit.
