GERMAN FLANK

Deadlock; Yanks Stalled

Near Bologna.

ROME, Oct. 13 (U. P.).—British 8th army forces rolled back the German Adriatic flank on a broad front today as American 5th army troops, attacking behind a blazing aerial barrage, fought furiously to break open the Nazi hill defenses south of Bologna. Breaking the 10-day deadlock that had stalled their advance to the rim of the Po valley, the 8th army veterans swung forward in a general offensive that gained ground everywhere except on the narrow Adriatic coastal strip. . The new drive came as German resistance stiffened on the American 5th drmy front before Bologna, stalling the Yank advance up highway 65 in the Livergnano sector less than 10 miles south of the big railroad and highway hub. Generally clear weather prevailed over the battle areas, and it was indicated that allied bombing fleets had resumed the attack on the Bologna area in a follow-up to yesterday's record saturation assault. Wave upon wave of American heavy and medium bombers and fighter-bombers blasted the German defenses surrounding Bologna yesterday in an attack that ‘headquarters spokesmen said was heavier than the assault that leveled Cassino last March,
