May Set Record
NEW YORK, Sept. 2 (U. P)— "A new record indoor featherweight gate of approximately $85,000 is expected to be set at Madison Square Garden tonight when Willie Pep “defends his 126-pound crown (New York version) against ex-Cham-pion Chalky Wright in a return 15sound bout. Pep of Hartford, Conn, end veteran Wright, Los Angeles Negro, established the current record of $71,868 in their first fight, Nov. 20, 1042, when Pep captured the title
. from Chalky on a close decision.
Pep is favored at 13-5 because of his youth, speed, ringcraft and brilHant record. The “Connecticut * Comet"—victor in 78 of his 79 professional bouts—is rated. by some veteran observers as on a par with the greatest champions of his division: George Dixon, Terry MecGovern, Abe Attell, Tony Canzoneti, Bat Battalino and Henry Armstrong.
