‘Flying Parson’ Killed in Alaska

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (U. P.) ~The Rev. Harold L. Wood, Alaska’s “Flying Parson,” was killed in a plane crash near Ketchikan, Alaska, Monday, according to information received yesterday by the Seventh Day Adventist church.

Wood had administered the , church's work in Alaska since 1929, covering the fleld for the last two years in his own threepassenger plane. He previously operated a medically-equipped yacht alorlg the Alaskan coast.

the red blood cells, was discarded. The plasma, a colorless fluid, was separated from the blood cells and dehydrated for use overseas and the blood cells left over were waste. When blood cells are needed for a transfusion at the Wakeman hospital, Lt. Col. Paul N. Ivins, chief of the laboratory service of the hospital, notifies the Indianapolis blood donor service and the next day the bottled cells are delivered to the hospital in a small refrigerated box. Besides being used on wounded patients, the blood cells are used in cases of anemia and also in cases where extremely sick soldier patients would suffer too severe a reaction from transfusions made with whole blood. These blood cells can be given in transfusions to persons with any of the four blood types.
