Stationed in Jungle, Lt. Pace Finds Home Was Never Like This.
The New Guinea jungle is about
‘the most unpleasant habitat a man can ‘occupy, according to letters 9d Lt. Robert P. Pace has' written to his parents, Mr. and Mrs, Archie | _ B Pace, 5030 W. 15th st, Speed-| § way City. Mud | that is the general consistency of chewing gum, heat and steamy moisture that drain all the energy out of a man, snakes and a large variety of insects which are hug interesting to the zoologist but unLt Pace iecirable as bedfellows, are just a few of the things that make Lt. Pace dream Jongingly of Indiana and home. It. Pace hasn't accumulated any Jap souvenirs, he says, because “I don’t want anything around to remind me of this.” Speaking of Japs, Lt. Pace says, *Two boys from the message center where I work went out on a patrol one morning. They came upon two Nips sleeping in a hut and woke them up, told them to take their clothes off. One of them grinned and buttoned up his shirt. The other made a dive for his pistol and they shot them both immediately, brought back the Japs’ - money and personal effects.”
Acquire a Radio In one letter to his family, Lt
+ Pace. writes, “We've acquired elec-
tric light, a radio, and a shower since moving into this jungle area four days ago. It ‘seems too luxurious for this neck of New Guinea. This place is a goologist’s paradise, but I'm just a poor lost lamb who slaps at his neck and warily eyes each exotic bug. We have pink moths, white cockatoos, centipedes six inches long, ants that flay and ants that bite.” Pointers on Christmas presents and how to package them which Lt. Pace sent his parents are of interest to others who have members of their families serving in jungle areas where everything must be protected from dampness. Lt Pace suggests latex, pliofilm, oilskin and oil paper for wrapping such items as food, stationery and books. Talcum powder should be sprinkled on the gummed flaps of envelopes, he says, 80 jungle moisture won't pre-seal them, The 23-year-old officer has been in the air corps since 1942. He is 8: graduate of Shortridge high school and attended DePauw and Butler universities.
