reconversion bill on which senatehouse conferees are hopelessly deadlocked. The talks were discontinued last week while the house conferees returned for further instructions on two senate provisions—unemployment compensation for 3,500,000 federal war Jrorkers and travel pay for discharged war workers, Both provisions were approved by the senate and thrown out in the house. The lower chamber was expected to maintain its position and
insruct its conferees to insist on dis- |"
agreement with the senate. @ The surplus property and demobilization bills remained as the major barriers to congressional adJournment for an election recess, but there was some hope that—barring a presidentipl veto—both could be disposed of in time to begin a holiday this week-end. The first suggestion of a possible veto to either bill came from) Bepator Arthur H. Vandenberg (R.!| Mich), who*told reporters Saturday

COURT TAKES OVER
CHICAGO, Sept. 18 (U, P)— Federal Judge Michael L. Igoe today threw the 17-year-old battle for control of Chicago's Surface Lines into bankruptcy court and announced that John E. Sullivan, vice
their chief financial officer, will serve on a board of four trustees as chairman for joint management and operation while in bankruptcy. The judge said that bankruptcy proceedings would place the lines directly under control of the court and they could be more easily disposed of at a future date.

. Scripps-Howard Newspaper Alliance WASHINGTON, Sept. 18.—The administration expects farm prices to fall and farmers incomes to decrease sharply in the postwar world, it was stated in a booklet designed to enlighten veterans on farm prospects. ; Published by the department of agriculture with a foreword written by Secretary Wickard, the pamphlet said that farming may be a hard way of life with Tow income, and
of the land and relative family security. ’ No such optimistic statements as the campaigners make about maintaining the 150-billion-dollar annual income of the wartime peak werc contained in the booklet entitled “Shall I Be A Farmer?”
Farm Prices Must Be Low
“The price paid for the farm must not be more than you can pay back from your earnings after you have met your living expenses,” it
“Remember that prices of farm products in the future, as in the past, are likely to rise and fall. Wartime prices are not likely to continue indefinitely. If your hogs, milk, or cotton should bring only half as much as they do now, and they might in the future, it will be hard to pay off your farm debt, especially if you paid a wartimeboom price for your land.”
Census Shows Low Income
And at another point the warning was repeated: “Prices in the post-war period may again fall below those of 1941.” The farm census of 1940 was cited to show that “more than half of all farmers in the U. §. had gross incomes under $1000, One-third of this group had additional income from outside employment, Twothirds did not.” The pamphlet summed up the situation: “Measured in dollars and cents,
But, if you meet certain essential requirements, you may enjoy a substantial degree of security. These requirements are: “lL. That you get a farm that is big enough to mgke a living on. 2. That you do not pay more for it than it is worth on the basis of what you can earn over a period of years. 3. That you farm it well and manage your business affairs well. 4. That the terms under which you borrow money to pay for your farm are favorable.”

stitute materials and designs, and then work back to old practices or forward to new ones, both at once, Engines and chassis will not be much different from those in the models dated 1942, but there are] reports of major changes in appearance. These could be effected in bodies today without the enormous expenditures on sets of dies which the motor companies had to make when the all-steel bodies came in. Methods worked out in aircraft manufacture, including the use of dies made of Kirksite, a zinc alloy, and of plastic are said to enable manufacturers to make short runs of designs they are not sure of, or which have to be temporary. The first new automobiles may be on the market as curiosities next spring, but the volume production which would enable almost anybody to buy a car, say 100,000 passenger cars a week, probably cannot be reached until the summer of 1946.

Bearing in mind that Richman Brothers Clothes always have been noted for their exceptional value, this is a high compliment indeed.
