Decision of. Germans to Fight It Out Complicates
Peace Talks. ’
By NAT A. BARROWS Times Foreign Correspondent STOCKHOLM, Wednesday, Sept. 13.—The Pinnish situation is rapidly growing more involved and ticklish as a result of Col. Gen. Lothar Rendulic’s reported decision to stand and fight it out in north Pinland instead of evacuating his Austro-German troops before Friday under the Finns Sept. 15 ultimatum. . The present wholesale civilian evacuations from western Finland show that the people are expecting active war there. They realize they would be surrounded on three sides

That explains now why the Russians waited a full 24 hours to cease firing on the Karelian front only after Mannerheim had ordered the Finns to halt shooting. This correspondent is able to confirm reliably that this Russian armistice was contrived as a Kremlin intention to release Finnish troops from the Karelian front and enable them to start moving into position against the Germans’ Arctic flank.
Two Alternatives
President Baron Carl Gustav Mannerheim has only two alternatives if Rendulic persists in a hopeless last ditch fight: (1) To back up the Finnish ultimatum by using Finnish troops in an attempt to intern the Germans, (2) to permit the Russian army, already poised for action, to enter Finland and
The Finns naturally do not want Russian soldiers inside Finland, regardless of the reasons for their entrance. . On the other hand, it
