NE JORDAN

DEAR JANE JORDAN—I have been married for a short time to a very sweet, pretty girl. We live'alone in a furnished apartment which we both like and we're happy except for one thing. My wife would rather take a licking than keep house. I work 10 hours a day and come home tired to find the breakfast dishes are still on the table. The place is a mess. She used to work in the day and I thought that was the reason so I made her quit work but things haven't improved a bit. - She says

she is lonely all day with nothing to do but listen to the radio and read, but still the house is a mess. The ‘man downstairs has been up to ‘ask her to empty the pan under the ice box as it was running through his ceil~ ing and onto his i furniture, The A other night it Janie Jordan 1 took me exactly two and a half hours just to clean the living room. I spent half my day off cleaning house, I knew before I married her that she couldn't cook but I thought she would at least be decent enough to keep her home clean. I don't mind eating out but the dirty house gets me down. Do you think it fair for a husband to work hard all day ahd clean house at least . three nights a week? Her

feels she never can equal it and quits altogether. Sometimes the mother is dissatisfied with a child's first fumbling efforts and feels that

{she rather would do the work her‘|helf than be bothered with inexpert help. Early in the game your wife! ‘| gave up the struggle and has carried

her childhood pattern over into her marriage. : Recently I heard of a man in your shoes who cracked the whip over his wife's head, scared her into doing the work, but lost her love in the process. You have gone to the other extreme and played the sap by doing the work yourself. The solution lies somewhere in between. The girl is young and will respond to a kind, but very firm attitude. Since she acts like a child, treat her like a child. Lay out a reasonable amount of work to begin with, and if she doesn’t get it done, bear with her while she finishes it in the evening, but see that it is finished. Demand a better performance the next day and be as lavish with your approval as with your disapproval. You will need plenty of patience, but you also need determination. And never, never, never refer to her mother’s fine performance, for that
