LANDING ROUGH, HOOSIER WRITES
. Officer Cantwell
: Bomnard Cantwell Tells - Part During Invasion Of South France. Factors which harassed American
sirmen in the invasion of Southern ‘France have been described in a
~ Jetter from Flight Officer Bernard

Fields Blocked
“We knew when we were going over that we just had a few fields and very small ones at that. There
" were just a few that we could land
in as the rest had those anti-para-trooper and glider poles sticking up all over them. Those poles are from six to 12 inches in diameter and range from 20'to 30 feet high;
‘Just small trees stripped of their
limbs and planted in the ground here and there in such a pattern that it was impossible to find a Straight path through them from any, angle. Their arrangement could best be described as a sloppy check-er-board pattern.
Miracle Landing
“Well, when we got here the fields to be used were already taken. Every. field was small and filled with grape vines and those poles. We finally landed in one of those after dodging gliders on the way down. By some miracle, we only knocked down two poles and ended up at the end of a short vineyard about eight feet short of a ditch. Our left wing fell about three feet short of a small concrete machinegun emplacement which luckily for us was at that time vacated. . Circled by Enemy “We spént two and one-half days surrounded by krauts till the boys from the coast fought through to our boys who were fighting toward them, We weren't surrounded in the sense that we were pinned down. exactly, but we were in a valley and at every degree of the 360 points of the compass were the Germans up in the surrounding hills.” Officer Cantwell has been overseas since April, serving in England before being transferred to Italy for the invasion, He attended school in Beech Grove and Cathedral and worked “for the New York Central railroad before entering the army.
