Jon Goes ‘Invisible’

Now You See Hall, Now You Don't at Lyric. -

Jon Hall has a role in the picture which opened yesterday at the Lyric that ‘many less popular

for. He plays the lead in the Universal film, “The Invisible Man's

Revenge.” Playing a man who returns from Africa>-aftér suffering from amnda for five years, Mr. Hall suggests to Lester Matthews and Gale Sondergaard that they give back the money t stole from him. They attempt to liquidate the debt by dropping him in the river after slipping him a mickey fiun. Leon- Errol, the innocent bystander, retrieves him.

Fades Into Sin Air

After the usual scientific legerdermain, this time by John Carradine, Mr. Hall's 196 pounds fade into thin air, Thus protected from mickeys and unexpected swims, he sets out to pursue his debtors. That mission is successful hut Mr. Hall crowds his luck by essaying the role of Don Juan. He finally meets his match when he runs afoul of Brutus—a -great Dane that was rendered invisible by one of Carradine's earlier experiments. Brutus, with laudable canine loyalty, resents the killing of his

own private revenge.

Indiana theater.

The plot, which is set in New Orleans, is really two stories, one told by a series of flashbacks to bring the audience up-to-date. A newly commissioned army officer, Dean Harens, learns that his flancee has married someone else as he is preparing to fly home for the wedding, He gets as far as New Orleans, where he meets Deanna Durbin, who is sifging torch songs in a cheap cafe.

Miss Durbin, playing the part of

tenant how she met dashing Robbert Manette (Gene Kelley), scion of an After a brief romance they marry and Abigail is quickly accepted by Manette's mother who hopes a wife will counteract Robert’s weaknesses, of which the wife, incidentally, knows nothing. i The happy marriage hits the rocks with a crash in six months, when Robert commits a murder and is sent up for life. Abigail feels she has failed him and imprisons her{self in the low resort as her pentitence. Her self-imposed ordeal comes to an end when Robert escapes from prison to kill her. An alert policeman kills him and Abigail, free of her obligations, looks forward to brighter times with the lieutenant,

“In Dramatic Role:

Miss Durbin, cast in a dramatic role, handles it with assurance. She sings only two songs, “Always” and “Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year,” in the lovely Durbin manner.

|

“Christmas Holiday” is mot a pleasant picture, It's a study in some of the more unpleasant

human emotions and far removed from Miss Durbin’s other works, but it is good entertainment. (By Robert J. Fox.)
