Otwell Man Wanted for Violation; Governor Gets Appeal.

The fate of Ed Garland, “exemplary” parolee of Otwell, Ind., today was in the hands of Gqgvernor Schricker who will have to decide whether to extradite Garland back to Illinois where he is wanted for parole violation. . More than 50 Otwell citizens have signed a petition for Garland’s freedom on grounds that he led an upstanding life in that down-state community, but Ray Smith, the ‘governor's secretary, said the document has not yet been received. He added that the governor will schedule an extradition hearing on the matter possibly next week, at the behest of Garland’s attorney. Fingerprints Checked Garland's 16-year-old parole violation was unearthed the day before he was to have taken a job in an Evansville war plant where his prison record was traced through fingerprints checked against FBI

files. Otwell petitioners, requesting Governor Schricker to block extradition proceedings instituted by Illinois, assert that since 1939 Garland has been a respected neighbor, having settled there with his wife and 8-year-old daughter,

Sentenced in Theft

Garland had been sentenced to a one to ten-year sentence at Louisville, Ill, on charges of stealing a flashlight and pocketknife from a country store. After serving two years, he was paroled to his brother, Arthur Garland, of Corydon, who allegedly failed to keep up reports on his activities. The parolee was arrested Monday night by Petersburg Sheriff Her‘man Willis who later was besieged by an Otwell delegation to release him without bond. He finally was released under bond at Evansville.

GOTHIC LINE ATTACK

OPENED BY BRITISH

ROME, Aug. 31 (U. P.).-British 8th army troops occupied the ancient renaissance cities of Pesaro on the Adriatic coast and Urbino, 19 miles inland, today and crossed the Foglia river to begin their longawaited assault on the Germans’ Gothic line. Front dispatches reported that the Germans had abandoned the entire area along the Foglia river for 16 miles inland and withdrawn behind the line's steel and concrete fortifications. Polish tank units entered Pesaro, a seaport town with a pre-war population of some 22,000, on the right bank of the Foglia. The Gothic line, built by the Germans to defend the broad stretches of the Po valley northward, had its eastern anchor in the centuries-old art center. Other 8th army troops, meanwhile, struck two and one-half miles across the Metauro river=to take Urbino, ancient town with a population of approximately 6000, situated 19 miles southwest of Pesaro,
