Mr. Winkle

Loew's Film Has Laughs And Thrills, too.

Edward G. Robinson, long filmdom’'s favorite gangster portrayer, trades in his gats for G. IL rifles as he wins new acting laurels in “Mr. Winkle Goes to War,” showing through Wednesday at Loew's theater. In a heart-warming part totally different from his “Little Caesar” roles, Robinson plays a timorous bark clerk turned mechanic who is inducted into the army before the passage of the 38-year-old deferment measure. The trials and tribulations of the 44-year-old Pvt. Hargrove during basic training provide the film's quota of laughs, while his spinetingling heroism in an encounter with the Japs furnish more than a minimum of thrills. Robinsons G. 1. portrayal is braced up with fine supporting roles by Bob Haymes, Richard Lane and Robert Arms strong. Making his bid for future juvenile billing is Ted Donaldson, whose portrayal of ah orphan lad and Mr. Winkle's special pal, carries the film through in its weaker spots. Ruth Warrick gives a good showeing as the domineering wife of the “Mr. Milquetoast” Winkle, Weak in parts, the film manages to hit enough high spots to keep the story from sagging. The actors put across the patriotic sentiment without lofty oratory and Robinson's depreciating attitude as he delivers his philosophical tidbits keep the dialog from sounding affected, Doubling with the Robinson film is “Address Unkown,” featuring Academy award winner Paul Lukas and K. T, Stevens. (By Donna Mikels.)

At the Alamo
