JANE JORDAN
DEAR JANE, JORDAN—I am the mother of a son in service. He has been overseas for seven and a half months, His wife and two children, #ges 16 months and three years, live with me. The wife works in a defense plant and I care for the children for her, but she refuses to accept responsibility for the children after working hours, “She thinks her eve- , Ings and Sundays should be free so she can go skating, swimming and to shows. I think I have done my part in watching the children through the day and should have my evenings for relaxation. After all I have raised my ' family and Idon't ~ think it is fair for me to be tied down day and night with her children even though I love them and don’t want them mis treated, What
for relaxation and enjoyment if she is ‘to carry on in her husband's place. It is just that she should not unload the whole burden on you. She is earning money and there is no reason why she should not hire someone to relieve you when she takes time out in the evening. Such young children should be in bed and asleep by 7 o'clock and it is not expensive to hire a schodl girl to sit with them. If the father was home the young parents would hire someone to take care of their children while they sought diversion. Why don't you suggest this compromise to your daughter-in-law instead of alienating her by insisting on her presence at home every evening? Never forget that her lot is hard, too, that she misses her husband, and that she has to. escape from her burdens at times. : . JANE JORDAN,
