GERMAN TANKS

Allies Strive to Feed Residents.

By JAMES E. ROPER United Press Staff Correspondent ROME, Aug. 17—German" tank units returned to the northern section of Florence yesterday, killing civilians and Carabinieri, and launching a reign of terror which still was in progress today with the food and water situation growing more critical by the hour. Less than a week ago the Germans withdrew their main forces northward to new positions just north of the Mugnone canal in the

they have made a no-man’s-land of the suburbs with machine gun and tank fire. Many thousands of civilians who remained in that area foraged desperately for food in the nearby countryside, although allied military government officials still were trying to bring food to them across the Arno river from the allied-held southern section of the city. British 8th army troops continued efforts to clear the city of enemy snipers, and an order was broadcast prohibiting the carrying of arms by any persons in Florence except the Carabinieri. It was announced today that the 351st infantry regiment, commanded by Col. Arthur S. Champeny of Wellington, Kas., and a

army; played an important part in driving the Germans from Garigliano to the Arno river. The regiment captured ‘San Romano on July 25.

SAN DIEGO, Aug.\17 (U, P.)— Chief Radioman George Tweed, 42, who throughout the 31-month Japanese occupation of Guam lived as a solitary fugitive in the island's caves and jungles, filed suit for divorce almost as soon as he reached home, court records revealed today. Tweed was given an interlocutory decree Aug. 8. He filed the suit July 25, two weeks after his rescue from Guam on a warship. Tweed charged that his wife, who was evacuated from Guam in 1841, had caused him to be socially ostracized on the island because she “insulted” the wives of other servicemen. One of the first things Tweed did on his return to this country was to file the divorce suit. Judge Jacob Weinberger granted the decree. Mrs. Tweed told reporters when the sailor's miraculous adventure was revealed last week that she had never given up hope he would: return. But.in his suit, Tweed said she associated with other men in the armed forces and asked them for money in his presence. He was given the deed to the couple's San Diego home, and Mrs. Tweed was awarded custody of their 3-year-old son Robert and $10 monthly. Mrs. Tweed also has
