THURSDAY, AUG. 17, ARMEN'S GEAR NOW 1 HEATED

Equipped - ‘With . New ‘Sub-Zero’ Suits.

x By Science Service - WRIGHT FIELD, O. Aug. 17. Alr crews of the army air forces now bombing Germany are equipped with new, electrically heated, subzero flying suits to protect them from the frigid temperatures at high altitudes. At 30,000 feet, nearly six miles up, temperatures of 60 degrees below zero are not uncommon, and frostbite may cripple a man, or cause the loss of fingers and toes. : The new flying suit, designated the F-3, is lighter in weight and less bulky than the heavy unheated suits, now in general use. It consists of overall-like trousers and jacket worn over long underwear and regular government issue woolen OD clothing. Two electrical circuits are built into gloves, shoes, and jacket, and three in the trousers, so that only part of the heat is lost if one of the unit circuits should fail.

Shoes Heated, Too Completing the costume are elecs

trically-heated shoes worn under-

eclal flying boots, and heated gloves worn over rayon glove

inserts and under an insulative

mitten. Six-foot extension cords, known as pigtails, furnish’ electrical connections to adjustable rheostats built in at combat stations throughout the plane. The plugs lock with simple. clockwise twists to prevent accidental disconnections. A. A, PF. materiel command engineers are now conducting experiments on two new 'types of thermostats which eventually may eliminate the need fot an adjustable rheostat. The new flying suit is designed to maintain top body efficiency during training or combat flying for all temperatures down to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit at sea level, regardless of the flight's ‘duration. They provide protection not possible with present types of unheated
