Curmudgeon Chuckle.
“Bathing Beauty,” the title of the M-G-M picture that opened yesterday at Loew's, is no understatement. Swimming champion Esther Williams is not only a beauty—she bathes. There also is an appreciable number of other girls in cast who not only swim but fill bathing suits in. the way the designers intended. Red Skelton, who plays: opposif Miss Williams, is cast as ig song writer whose bumbling in and around 'a girls’ college Is material for much merriment. “Bathing Beauty” won’t be mentioned on any lists of the year's 10 best films but it makes pleasant, frothy, summer entertainment, Water Ballet Pleasant The water ballet is pleasant to watch and builds up to the finale without undue delay, An animated discussion between Xavier Cugat (accent, Spanish) and Basil Rathbone (clipped British) is one of the best arguments that has been presented yet for basic English. Harry James’ orchestra is included to furnish the sound effects when the Cugat ensemble is out for a smoke. Or, mayhap, it’s the other way around. “Bathing Beauty” should win at
