“The Lady and the Monster,” the Republic picture that opened yesterday at the Lyric theater, is another pseudo-scientific thriller ine volving a mad scientist, a pretty . |laboratory assistant and a heterogeneous assortment of other characters. It's a little difficult to determine just who the monster is, The scientist, Erich von Stroheim, his assistant, Richard Arlen, and The Brain am | are all in the running for the title jat ong time or another. Von Stroheim’s role as the mad !scientist makes him. the obvious | candidate, Richard Arlen's actions while un{der the joint directorship of von | Stroheim and The Brain put him in | the running.

And, of course, there's The Brain . .. after all, a human brain radiati! ing! malignantly in a laboratory jar is a monstrous thing. Vera Hruba Ralston, the pretty {laboratory assistant, is indubitably {meant to be the lady in the case.
Her accent—the plot demands that she be of Slavic extraction—is excelled only by von Stroheim’s, which is a tribute to the damsel’s ‘histronic talents.
