Economist Says Prosperity, Not Depression, Usually Follows War By ROGER BUDROW -

ALL THIS TO DO ON POST-WAR PLANNING assumes that we are liable to have a big depression whereas the fact is that after every major war or natural disaster such as an earthquake or Chicago fire, we have had a period of prosperity, according to Dr. Malchoir Payli. This economist, who apparently disagrees with 98 per cent of present-day ideas on this line, says we are afraid of a post-war depression because we remember that in 1920-21 there was a sudden break in commodity and securities prices, a wave of bankruptcies and unemployment.

Purdue Reports Estimates Higher Acreage but

Smaller Crop.

The July 1 corn crop estimate for Indiana revealed a lower yield in corn this year, the Purdue -university agricultural statisticians, co-op-erating with the U. 8. bureau of agricultural economics, reported today. The corn acreage indicates an 8

| per cent increase above that of last

year and 10 per cent above the 193342 average. A 45-bushel-per-acre

yield is expected, with total produc-

tion estimated at around 208,710,000 bushels. The latter figure is slightly Jess than a year ago, but 27 per cent greater than the 1033-42 average. However, the tondition of the corn crop July 1 was reported at 79 per cent of normal. Hot, dry weather combined with chinch bug damage were factors influencing this condition.

Winter Wheat Output Rises

Total estimated winter wheat production is 27,874,000 bushels, which is 634,000 bushels above the estimate given June 1. This is 184 per cent of last year’s production and about the same as the 1933-42 average. Total soybean acreage for the state is estimated at 1,990,000 acres, which is 6 per cent greater than the acreage a year ago and nearly twice as great as the 1933-42 average.

this year: is estimated at 12 per cent less than the acreage a year ago and 6 pér cent less than the 10-year average. Total production is estimated at 34,425,000 bushels which is 4 per cent larger than last year's production,

Barley Acreage Is Lower

It is indicated that barley acreage is 20 per cent lower than the acreage a year ago. The yield is estimated at 26 bushels per acre and total production at 1,222,000 bushels. Rye is estimated at 15

vear. The yield is indicated at 14 bushels per acre and production at 1,400,000 bushels. The potato and sweet potato acreage are estimated at about the same as last year, with yields indicated at 90 bushels per acre for potatoes and 95 bushels for sweet potatoes. The total estimated production is 3,690,000 bushels of potatoes and 142,000 bushels of sweet potatoes.

Hay Yield Is Average

Total production of tobacco based on estimated acreage and yields. is 9,820,000 pounds. An average yield of 14 tons per acre and total production of 2,817.000 tons is estimated for tame hay. Pasture condition on July 1 was re-| ported at 80 per cent of normal as! compared with 94 per cent a year ago. The stock of corn on farms July 1 this year was considerably lower
