Hammond and Evansville Plants Reconverting : Already—But to Make Shells, Repair Yanks gn A ROGER BUDROW
JUDGING FROM THE EXODUS Washington and the trek of war workers peacetime jobs you might get the idea that the war is prac-

tically over. .

orders are marked “rush.” time) is being converted to make | heavy shells, If Hammond weren't + in a critical labor
plant would be expanded. Other plants are likewise converting. Plants making large shells already are stepping up production. Takes quite a few shells to pulverize a Pacific island. Down at the other end of the state, at Evansville, Chrysler is starting to overhaul 2000 tanks. It had been making small-arms ammunition there but we seem to have too much at the moment. The Evansville plant has turned out 2.264.000.000 45 caliber cartridges. (Remember, we once had too many tanks—but that was before the Normagdy beachhead). The job on the 30-ton tanks will take 10 months, use at least 2500 workers. The idea is to rearm them to today™s battle standards. They're not old, but styles change quickly in war, and unless your tank is better than the enemy's tanks and anti‘tank guns, it's not very good for you, naturally, = 2 ” TODAY'S BEST DEFINITION: Says Prof. R. OPA TO FIGHT STEEL PRICE CEILING DODGE
A drive was started today by the Indiana district office of price administration against the dealers in steel products who attempt to evade ceiling price regulations by renting space in warehouses and storing materials with the view of holding them for higher warehouse prices. Because of a shortage in certain kinds of industrial , two types of “ceiling “prices “have been placed on them, those set for the millers and those set for the -established warehouses. Only established operators who have registered as such may charge the. higher prices which run from $250 to $18 above those of the millers. Included in commodities involved in the evasive practice are steel

Lively Revue.
A couple of zany fugitives from Red Skelton’s defunct radio show, Ozzie Nelson and Mwife, Harriet Hilliard, this week pace a Circle stage routine that zings along with miich professional “savvy.” For some reason, Harriet limits her repertoire to singing, passing up the opportunity to cash in on her well-known air characterization of Skelton's “mummy.” In addition
to jogging through band-leading motions, Ozzie is something of a comic in his own right. Sample: Ozzie—“We now take you to the romantic sands of Arabia.” Harriet—“Ah, your love is so intense here.” Ozzie—‘Yes, we do everything in tents here.” &
