Island who marries an English baronet. In a series of “flashbacks,” it relates the story of hi life during 25 years in England. In Britain, in 1914, for a twoweek visit with her riewspaper publisher father, played by Frank Morgan, Miss Dunne as Susan, meets Sir John Ashwood (Alan Marshall) through the conniving of C. Aubrey Smith at a ball in London.
Becomes Lady Ashwood
She becomes Lady Ashwood after a whirlwind courtship and some mutual misunderstandipgs between the Ashwood family and herself. Everything is ironed out, but before they return from their honeymoon, England goes to war with Germany. The British government makes it possible for her to visit Maj. Ashwood at Dieppe, and just as the armistice is declared she receives word that her husband has died in
action.
Balking at the Ashwood tradition that the eldest son in each generation must join the service, she attempts’ to persuade: her son,
'Iplayed by Roddy McDowall, to go :|to America. He dissuades her with
the argument that his duty is to the country of his birth.
