Build Comfort In
“The old idea was that you first built a house and then gradually made it into a home by putting in comfort items later,” explained C. B. Sweatt, vice president of Mirn-neapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co. “That's obsolete. A home should be built for maximum comfort. In
ready to build real comfort into the house right at the start.” Some solar heating enthusiasts make the flat statement that a house should be built so that its length faces south, with the glass walls areas on that side. Others temper that a bit and say the glass areas “preferably should face south.” Thermopane, a Libby-Owens-Ford development, is the specially designed glass that not only lets the sun rpys in but keeps down heat loss. Since Thermopane is constructed of two or more panes of glass with a dehydrated air space between, it tosses out the old theory that where you have lots of glass areas you'll also have drafts and heat leakage. The panes ought to be about four feet in width for a one-story solarheated house, say Libby-Owens-Ford engineers.

Some people will continue to hold out for radiator heating, no matter what sort of virtues are ascribed to newer systems. They're used to radiators and they dike ‘em. But they doubtless will prefer having them concealed in the walls if they're building new homes. The built-in radiators will differ in size and shape, of course, from those we're accustomed to, but their basic design principles will be the same.

ing system, since the sun is only a daytime auxiliary. But its aid materially cuts down the fuel bill Ralph Winslow, an executive of Libbey-Owens-Ford, explains that “experiments have proved solar heating to be economical, as the thermostat of your regular heating unit automatically turns off as the sun's rays increase the temperature.” Thermopane 5 by 6 feet costs about $60 at the factory. This, of course, doesn't include cost of installation.
