Graduations Held at Purdue, DePauw Universities And Wabash College.
By UNITED PRESS ° Four hundred and twelve students were awarded degrees at two Indiana universities and one Hoosier college yesterday. At Wabash college for men, 15 of the 22 graduates were inthe armed forces. Purdue university conferred degrees on 229 students, and DePauw university presented diplomas to 161. Purdue's president, Dr. Edward C Elliott, made a three-minute talk at the 75th commencement, saving that the real test facing the graduates was “your ability to learn things that have not yet been taught you.” Honorary degrees were conferred on Dr. G. 1. Christie, former Purdue faculty member, now president of Ontario agricultural college: Dr. Chester H. Werkman, Ames, Ia, a 1918 Purdue alumnus, and Col Blake van Leer, 1915 Purdue alumnus who will be inaugurated July 1 es president of Georgia College of Technology. Judge Talks at DePauw
DePauw's baccalaureate address at the 105th annual commencement of the institutlon was given by| Florence Allen. judge of the U. S.| circuit court of appeals at Cleveland, O. Judge Allen blamed “moral bankruptey” of the years following world war I for the present conflict and said that a moral rebirth among nations was as necessary as “international machinery” in the postwar period. Honorary degrees were given the Rev. Charles Howard Taylor of Crawfordsville and the Rev. Edwin Ronald Garrison of Wabash. Dr. Donald J. Cowling, president of Carelton college, Northfield, Minn. addressed the 106th annual commencement at Wabash, and urged that the teachings of Christianity be used to solve the world's post-war problems.
