| Grable Star

At Indiana

There used to be a rule, and probably still is, that any gangster film f|to get past the Hays office had to end with the general slaughter or incarceration of any and all criminals concerned. This proved that crime doesn’t pay. br By the same scale it's surprising 2 that “Pin Up Girl,” which opened at the Indiana yesterday, got by. For Miss Grable is outrageously, and charmingly, mendacious—furthermore she pays no penalty for her “imagination.” Which may or may not prove a point. The story deals with the adven§1 tures of Lorry Jones (Betty Grable), the belle of a small town U. 8. O. and her friend Kay Pritchard (Dorothea Kent). Going to Washington to take civil service jobs they detour to New York where they meet a night club owner (Joe E. § | Brown) and two sailors (John Harvey and Dave Willock). Lorrys’ passing herself off as a Broadway singer, leads to a certain amount of not too deft byplay about mistaken identity but as always happens in musicals everything ends amicably, Molly McKay (Martha Raye) sings “Yankee Doodle Hayride” and “Red Robins, Bob Whites and Blue Birds” with her usual enthusiasm— #land her contortions, both facial and § otherwise, and truly fascinating to watch. Her acrimonious bickering 1 with Eddie Hall is at times almost {| funny. | The course of a popular song is t the very least unpredictable but {| “The Story of the Very Merry Widiiow”.and “Don’t Carry Tales Out of | School” may be heard more often. (By Robert J. Fox.)

‘Gaslight’ Is

Boyer Cast as Villain Loew's Film. The very name “Gaslight” and

ture this week is filled with mystery and suspense. Charles Boyer, this time, is the hated husband who from the very beginning of his marriage to Ingrid Bergman deliberately sets out to drive her insane to hide the terrifying secret of his own past. When the film opens, a beautiful young singer Miss Bergman, is deeply in love with her accompanist (Mr. Boyer). He's a likeable man who proposes soon after he meets the pretty niece of a rich and fa-

|mous singer.

Plot Unravels

But as tue plot unravels, you learn to hate him more and more for his cruel insinuations and mean treatment of his wife. He keeps her locked in the spacious London home where her aunt had been murdered, prevents her from having {riends and daily tells her she is forgetting things, losing valuable jewels and stealing his own watch. The attempt to drive his wife mad would have been accomplished had not an ambitious young man from Scotland vard interfered. The detective, played by Joseph Cotten, had been a great admirer of Miss Bergman's aunt and took a keen interest in the murder case which had been left unsolved.

Ending Is Emotional

The ending is very emotional with Miss Bergman getting revenge on her once-loved husband. Her performance as the wife who is slowly going insane is excellent and Charles Boyer is outstanding as a hated man instead of a lover: The picture lasts nearly two hours but the time is well-spent and there isn’t a second feature to sit through. (By Mildred Reimer.)
