By B. J. MeQUAID Times Foreign Correspondent ABOARD A COMBAT TRANSPORT, June 6 (Delayed)—Carrier pigeons, first employed in war by Hannibal—or was it elephants?— tried to stage a comeback for this 1944 fvasion, but we shall have a wa to struggle along with radio be-
f brace of roast squab. At first it looked | like a great dis-; covery. An army Mr. McQuaid pigeoneer — that's! what the signal corps calls them— | was a fellow passenger in & small boat going out to an amphibious | force flagship. He had a dozen birds with him in small wooden | crates and said that his outfit had | trained the birds specially for this operation. i It was intended once the invasion armada had sailed to release pi-| geons at regular intervals. They, would fly back to England with pic- | tures of the sailing formations and | anything else of interest. They; could carry messages, of course, and | that is very important in an opera- | tion like this because radio silence may have to be maintained right up to H-hour or longer. i
Pigeoneer Enthusiastic Think of it. First reports of this great event might reach the out-| side world by means of my pigeons. | You can see how enthusiastic the pigeoneer was. | He brightened up. still more when I suggested the possibility of] sending back news stories by pigeon. “Oh, sure, come aboard and I'l introduce you to my colonel and I'm sure he can arrange it.” | As things turned out I wound up in a different ship and was the first to scuttle to the wardroom. A =ouple of soldiers, probably spies, had tried to smuggle two carrier pigeons aboard and had been flung in the brig, pigeons and all. Thorwn Into Brig “Sure, I threw them in the brig” said the transport division com- | mander when I went towards him! to check the story. “What else?” “You know what the security reg- | ulations are on this operation. | There has been no ship-to-shore! communication for days. There is! not supposed to be a peep out of any of us until H-hour. The crews| are sealed, the officers are sealed, I'm sealed, you're sealed, and here these jokers suddenly show up aboard my ship with carrier pigeons.

Just a couple of soldiers, who say someone sent them, | “Oh, yes, someone did send them and I let them out of the brig right ‘away—but the pigeons. How the hell do I know where a pigeon might go? “The pigeons are in the brig and that's where theyll stay unless I decide to have them for fast. What do you say to that? Want to come up and be my guest for breakfast? | I thanked him warmly. Pigeons | for breakfast at H-Hour, minus 30 minutes. Won't that be something? oa pigeons are in the brig. |
