LAUER DEFENDS LYONS ON KLAN

‘Red Herring,’ G. 0. P.

Chairman Says. The Ku-Klux Klan issue raised

Evansville) foday brought a reply trom Republican State Chairman John Lauer. “I can't understand a practical politician making such a statement,” said Mr. Lauer in reference to Congressman LaFollette’s bitter attack Saturday - on Mr, Lyons, “I can’t understand the attempt|

| by certain people to draw red heri rings across our path, to rattle 20-

year-old skeletons or to start a witch hunt”

LaFollette’'s Statement

Mr. LaFollette in his statement said he was opposed to the domina-! tion of the Republican party “by. anyone who has made a financial profit out of peddling racial or religious hate.” The Evansville congressman, who is seeking re-election, was referring to the fact that Mr. Lyons once handled Klan finances during the ‘208. “Being one of the few residents of mv community who never belonged to the Klan, it is hard for me to become excited about one man’s intolerance of the other man’s opinion, politics or religion,” Mr. Lauer said.

Report Assurances

The state chairman said party leaders had been assured by Mr, Lyons that the latter asks nothing in return for his services as national committeeman but good gov-

ernment and the winning of the!

war. Mr. Lyons was elected national committeeman at a surprise meeting of the Republican national convention delegates at the Columbia club Friday night. The vote was 19-to-8 in his favor over the in-

| cumbent committeeman, Ernest M.

Morris, South Bend investment banker, Lauer insisted that last week's G. O. P. state convention was controlled by the delegates and that the state committee had made no organized effort in behalf of any candidate. He also asserted that the ~ommittee had made no effort to go on record at the convention in support of the nomination of Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York for President. Lauer said that it was the opinion of the state committee that most of the delegates favored Dewey, but that they should go uninstructed as a courtesy to Governor Bricker of Ohio.

PARTISANS BATTLE

LONDON, June 5 (U. P.).—Yugoslav partisans stubbornly resisted a reinforced German offensive in western Bosnia and Benija and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy, a communique from Marshal Tito's headquarters said to-

day.

Front line reports said some of the heaviest fighting of the Yugoslavian campaign was under way as the Germans concentrated a large number of men and machines for a drive aimed at breaking the striking power of the partisans.
