. BIG LEAGUE SCOUTS are trailing the Milwaukee Brewers watching Outfielder Hal Peck, hit, bunt, run and throw. . . . Before Charlie Grimm resigned as Brewer pilot, to return to the Chicago Cubs, he listed Peck as a $50,000 to $65,000 asset. Caley Stengel, who replaced Grimm as Brewer pilot, calls Peck a “million-dollar baby” . . . The Wisconsin native is leading the American association in batting and has maintained an average above 400 since the start of the season. - In September, 1942, in a shooting accident in the yard of his Genesee, Wis, home, Peck lost two toes on his left foot, . .. For that reason, the Brooklyn Dodgers, who purchased the player before the accident, asked waivers. , . . The Chicago Cubs claimed him and from there he went back to Milwaukee. : Peck is 27 and has Jot of power at the plate in addition to his " skill in beating out wy .. Only time his left foot hurts, he says, is in the second game double-headers. ’
Peck Took Liking to Tribe Pitching
WHEN the Brewers played the Indians a three-game series at Victory field last Saturday and Sunday, Peck. collected six hits in 12 times at bat. . . . His safeties included a home run, a triple and two bunts. , ., . He is so adept at bunting that he beats 'em out even when the infielders play for him. ... He bats-and throws left.
o » . s o s PECK has been in the Brewer organization since 1938. He started in the old Kitty league, was promoted to the Three-I, and finally advanced to the Milwaukee varsity in 1940. In 1941, when Grimm and Bill Veeck took over the Brewers, Peck was their outstanding performer. . . . Impressed with the outfielder's speed right from the start, Jolly Cholly found pleasure watching Hal run. At Grimm's suggestion, Peck went in for bunting. . . . At one stretch, Hal bunted 17 times and beat out each attempt for a hit.
Tincup Pitched Perfect Game in ’17
BEN TINCUP, now building boats for Uncle Sam at Jeffersonville, Ind., took time out from his work the other day to swing three scrapbooks into action to prove the National League Service bureau miscued in crediting Chet Covington, southpaw of the Phillies, with being the first to hurl a perfect game in the minors. Covington performed the feat. while with Scranton in the Eastern league last season,
- - . = » s OLD BEN doesn’t know whether anybody else pitched a perfect game in the minors, but he has clippings to prove he accomplished the feat. : Hurling for Little Rock of the Southern association against Birmingham, June 18, 1817, the Indian faced only 27 batters, none getting a hit or reaching first base.
® » 2 2 8 ANSWER to query: The Indianapolis Indians’ games have not been broadcast so far this season because no local radio station was in a position to handle the broadcast at a suitable time, particularly night games, according to Al Schlensker, club secretary.
