JANE JORDAN
DEAR JANE JORDAN-—I am
married and live away from my
parents’ home. I have two married brothers and a single sister living at home with my parents, neither of whom is very strong. My mother is ‘& semi-cripple. My sister has a good job but does not help my parents in
any way, pays no board, and if my
folks give anything to the rest of us
is very jealous. Mother even does her washing and ironing but if she
she asks her to help she either does so
‘grudgingly or flatly refuses. If I
to she cries and says she
treated in any way and should not feel that way. It worries me y considerably, as "°° my parents are iu. hot able to care for her and it is dans Jordan absolutely unPecessary. It worries them both Yery much. Is there some way to make her see that.by pleasantly helping out she would be happier and so would mother and dad? PUZZLED. . . - . Answer: Certainly your sister should pay her board. It's your parents’ problem but your sister has them bluffed. Doubtless the methods she uses on them now are the methods she has used since childhood. They worked then as now and beéause of this she has failed $0 assume a mature and responsible attitude toward life, You can point out her duty. What §f she does cry? You can encourage her parents to treat her as a woman instead of a child. It it doesn't change the situation you can do no more except harden yourself against that which you cannot prevent. I imagine that you and your sister have been rivals since childhood. You grew up and married. She did not. It irks you to see her receive the benefits of childhood which you have renounced. Actually you are the winner and she the loser.
DEAR JANE JORDAN—I am 17,
fn love with a boy about to leave for the army. He thinks we are too young to get engaged until he comes
back but with
ss =» Answer: From a mature point of | view it is better for you to see other {boys while the young man is away.
{It is the best way to test your feel-|=—
{ing for him and tell whether it is going to last or not. However, at 17, a young girl often cannot see it that way. I suggest that you follow your own inclinations. After all you are not bound to the young man yet. He, too, may change his mind about “going steady” after he has been away for a while.
DEAR JANE JORDAN-—The other night at a party two men came over to my husband and me and introduced their wives to my husband. | He stood up, turned his back to me, laughed and talked for a while and never once attempted to introduce me to them. I was hurt about it. I asked him afterward why he didn't introduce me and he quly laughed about it; so I let the matter drop. What do you think about & man like that? DISGUSTED. . » ” Answer—]I think he isn't very well versed in the social amenities. Perhaps he feels awkward about making introductions. Many people do. However, you were quite right to tell him how you felt about it. Next time help him out. Get up and
avoid the issue. You can do so pleasantly without embarrassing him. You're right to let the subject drop until the next time. Put your problems in & letter to Jane
Jordan whe will answer your guescans in this column ally.
