When setting out cabbage, broccoli or caulifiower plants, protect them against root maggot by putting a shield of heavy paper, about 4 inches square, around the plant flush withsthe ground. This prevents the parent insect from laying eggs near the plant, and smothers any eggs. Protect tomatees, cabbages; pep<. pers and eggplants against cutworms by placing an upright paper collar around the stem when the plants are set out. The collar extends an inch below, and two to three inches above, soil level. Cabbages and broccoli like a little hydrated lime worked into the soil. A couple of tablespoons is sufficient for each plant. Be careful not to injure the roots, To make the most of every foot of ground, plant the spaces between tomato, pepper, eggplant and other all-season vegetables with radishes, lettuce, early beets and carrots which will be harvested long before the larger, slow-growing vegetables require the space.
