With this fact in mind, we suggest that the gardener choose, grow and freeze those varieties which have been tested and found to be satisfactory. WARTIME LIVING—

Teen-Age War Projects Help Many Communities

By ANN STEVICK NEA Staff Writer .« WASHINGTON, April 27.—Don't be surprised if your young hopeful soon turns into a promoter. The children’s bureau of the depart- | ment of labor is gathering up ideas for teen-age projects to be launched | through kid's clubs in a program beginning May 1, Child Health day. With doctors, public health officers, adult community workers and mothers busy with war jobs, children in many communities have. found

ways to help. In one town kids organized their own board of health to watch sanitary conditions in the : school They sent out inspec~ tors to see that candy was properly handled with scoops in the corner:

school district garbage cans and notified the regular board of health when something needed to be done.

Solve Family Problems

Other kids’ groups have taken over the family food problems for mothers working in war plants or volunteer activities. They are learning to plan meals, shop for low-point foods, watch ceiling prices and read labels to see that the family gets its money's worth. The children’s bureau urges that children's groups and their leaders look around the community and get going on the most important thing that needs to be done for public health, school lunch programs or safety campaigns. WP, A 10-to-1 réport by manufacturers in favor of oiling or waxing shoe-soles as a wartime measure to get longer wear is on hand in the standards division of the office of price administration. Although the report shows an even division of opinion as to

&

Ann Stevick |,

whether it should be made mandatory by the war production board, you will probably see more manufacturers take it up voluntarily. Some manufacturers are already doing it. Estimated lengthening of leather durability ranges from 14 to 75 per cent, averaging about 40 per cent.

Odds and Ends

. You'll get a simple re-applica-tion form around June 1 for next season's fuel oil rations. The office of price administration wants these forms sent back within a few days so rations can be handed out and delivery started during the summer when dealers are not swamped with orders. Handle your spray-gun with care, war production board warns gardeners. There won't be enough of them to go around.
