They hope to see it used alter the war in washing machines, refrigerators and other appliances. U. S. Rubber has a new fireresistant asbestos product now being used on heating and ventilating air-duct systems on airplanes which the company believes ought to have a good post-war market. Yesterday A. T. & T. announced that it plans to tryout short-wave radio relay systems’ for longdistance telephone service and for telephone service and for television, Already it is known that coaxial cable systems—cables capable of carrying several hundred ‘telephone conversations simultaneously in two metal tubes a little larger than a lead pencil with a copper wire inside each extending along its axis— works all right but it remains to be seen whether or not radio relay systems will be better and cheaper . ss 8 =» ODDS AND ENDS: If factory production per man-hour hadn't increased as it has since world war 1, due to better machinery chiefly, U. 8 would need 35,000,000 workers

instead of actually 13,600,000 to turn our current production. , . . State

U. S. FOREIGN HOLDINGS LISTED

Private fnvestments Total $13 Billion, Treasury

Reports.

WASHINGTON, April 20 (U. P). —Private American holdings in for« eign countries total more than $13,300,000,000, the biggest shares being in Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom, in that order. The figures, based on preliminary tabulations of a census of American property abroad, were released today by the treasury department. The treasury said the census, initiated nearly a year ago with the aim of furnishingsthe government information for use in economic, financial and commercial dealings with other nations, was the first of its kind undertaken here. The largest block of American investments was in the British Empire—$5,800,000,000, not far from half of all foreign holdings. Of this total, $4375,000000 is invested in Canada, including ownership of government and corporate securities, manufacturing and mining enterprises, urban and farm real es-

tate. Germany Leads The investment in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and northern Ireland) is $1,030,000,000. Holdings in Australia and New Zealand total $160,000,000. The report showed total investments in enemy countries fincluding Italy) of $1,775,000,000. The bulk of these $1.290.000,000—were in Germany, with an additional $265,000,000 in Italy and $80,000,000 in Japan. “The investment in enemy nations is more than triple the $450,000,000 of known axis holdings here” the treasury said, adding, “the bulk of the property has probably been seized by enemy governments.”

218,000 Owners

The figures also showed American ownership of more than $2,000,000,000 worth of property in enemyoccupied lands. United States’ financial interest in Latin-America was evident in the total of $3.250,000,000 invested in Central and South American countries. 7 In these investments, Cuba led the parade with $785,000,000, Mexico came next with $420,000,000 and Arsen followed with $355,000,-

Do treasury said the holdings belonged to a total of some 218000 owners, . including

Congress and Industry Win In Fight to Help Make _ Foreign Policy.

WASHINGTON, April 20 (U. PJ. —Congress and the oil industry have emerged victorious in thei fight to join with the administration in making future U. 8. foreign policy on oil. This became evident in the state department’s announcement late yesterday ha three industry leaders would be permitted to attend the current Anglo-American talks, and in the statement by the special senate ‘oll committee that congres— sional participation in formulation of national petroleum policy “has begun.” The concession to American oil interests followed protests that the United States was represented at the petroleum conferenge only by government officials while the British delegation included men high in the British oil industry. The state department first tried to satisfy the industry by naming a 10-man industry committee to meet only with the American dele-
