3 Biv war days every truck is at the mercy of its tires. That's why recapping is so important—it saves tires—and thereby saves trucks for essential wartime service. Large fleet operators have made it a practice for yearsto recap their truck tires—butoperators of two, three or five trucks do not always realize how much longer tires last when recapped. Start a recapping program for your tires now, if you are not already doing so. Recap the minute the tread wears smooth. Don't presume you can get new tires. Your ration board may not be able to allot you any, because military needs have increased enormously. No special permission is required for recapping. But the government urges timely recapping as a transportation conservation measure.

Consequently, both camps are wheeling their heavy guns into place for blasting at these leading figures in the opposing party, They are assembling newspaper clippings and all types of material which can be used when the campaign begins after the state conventions. And some of it probably will be fired before that time.
Cite Lobbyists
ONE SLOGAN | the Democrats plan to use against Mr. Gates is: “Lobbyists in front of him and lobbyists behind him.” They will point out that the man he has selected to direct his state headquarters at the Claye pool hotel, is Jess Murden of Peru, a registered railroad lobbyist during the 1943 session when the railroads tried to ' push through a bill to get the public to pay part of the costs of operating flasher signals. The Democrats will speculate’ publicly. as to whether,” if Mr. Gates is elected, the public won't end up by paying the costs of all flasher signal operations, plus much more. They will point out that the key figure in the background in the Gates chimp is Robert W. Lyons, big-time chain store lobbyist.
All that and much more will be used against Mr, Gates. The Democrats will scream “bessism” much as the Republicans did during the McNutt régime, ete. ete. 2 8 = \
Attack Schricker
AS FOR THE G. O. P. attack on the governor, it will be aimed chiefly at painting him as an ont. and-out New*Dealer. The Republicans believe they. can prove this very easily, despite his occasional anti-New Deal statements, by simply quoting his statements indorsing President Roosevelt for renomination and re-election. Realizing too that he is an exceptionally popular governor, the G. O. P. will attempt to whittle him down until he appears as a mere politician in the eyes of the public. State Auditor Richard T. James started off on this tack in a speech last night at Rushville when he said, in connection with the governor's proposal. to the legislature that the 7-cent school

-Shake Not » Run Supreme Court’ Justice Curtis Shake has notified Democratic party leaders that he will not seek renomination to the high court. He expects to return to his law practice at Vincennes. Judge Shake was one of the Democratic leaders frequently mentioned a few months ago as a probable candidate for the gubernatorial nomination, But like Mayor Jess Pavey of South Bend and others, he Iost interest when it became apparent that there was little chance of beating Senator Samuel D. JackSun of Ft. Wayne for the nominajon. Neither: is bitter. They weren't too much interested anyhow in the nomination in this admittedly tough year. Judge Shake said he expects to do some campaigning for a reform of the state's judicial system, trying either to institute a non-par-tisan election of judges setup or some other reform system. The other two Democratic supreme court justices, Michael Fansler and H. Nathan Swaim, will seek renomination. ” n ”

Malan for renomination as state superintendent of public instruction. The league previously had indorsed the senatorial candidacy of Homer E. Capehart.
