Patrons * at English's Take

‘Carmen’ in Stride.

Indianapolis’ two-night opera season opened last night with the S.R. O. sigh out in front of English's theater. The theater-goers took the San Carlo Opera company's colorful presentation of “Carmen” in their stride, and tickets were going fast for tonight's performance of “Il Trovatore.” Last night's presentation of the popular Bizet opera was a .gaudy, lively show with the accent on the melodrama and costume rather than on the singing. But it was sparkling entertainment.

Coe Glade Shines

The live wire of the performance was Coe Glade in the title role. By her forceful acting and excellent singing she dominated every act with her vivid portrayal of the taunting, faithless Gypsy cigaret girl Replacing Tandy Mackenzie in the role of Don Jose was Sydney Rayner, who was best in the final act as Carmen’s enraged lover, Mr. Mackenzie will replace Mr. Rayner in the leading male role of “Il Trovatore” tonight. Mostyn Thomas as Escamillo, the toreador, seemed somewhat stilted, {while Mary Henderson was pleasing ‘as Micaela. Others deserving of mention were Francesco Curci and | Fausto Bozza as the smugglers; ieda Bleicher and Lydia Edwards |a§ Gypsy friends of Carmen; Harold Kravitt as Zuniga, and Francis Scott as Morales.
