He returned to the battle scene against medical advice, rounded up eight men of his unit and led them up a hill left of the battalion to a rock wall behind which enemy machine guns were concealed. He moved along the edge of the field under mortar and artillery fire. Then he was fired on by two German riflemen at close range. He killed them both.

Childres continued his advance alone until he arrived at a house where he captured a German mortar. “His indomitable courage and coolness under deadly fire of a determined enemy enabled his battalion to continue its advance,” the citation read. Childres wore a helmet and an open-necked G. I. shirt as Devers presenting him the medal, said: “You did a swell job. I wish to congratulate you.” Asked later about his accomplishment, Childres merely explained:
