Report Big Ino Increase German Troop and Supply Forces.

ALLIED HEADQUARTERS, Naples, April 6 (U, P.).—Violent artillery duels have broken out on both flanks of the main 5th army front in southern Italy, a communique said today, as official reports revealed a sudden increase in German troops and supply movements around Cassino, The roar of allied and German cannonading rose to a furious pitch in the hills around Cassino and on the coastal sector 16 miles to the west as both sides sent hundreds of shells into the opposing battle lines. Allied shellfire particularly was heavy on the Cassino sector, and spokesmen said the 5th army gunners “successfully ‘engaged” big German motor columns and targets inside the town. There was no official explanation for the new activity in the German lines, but the reference to largescale transport movements suggest. ed the Nazis might have been moying in troops and equipment for a counter-thrust against the allied positions in and around the town.

men but that extension of the “nodeferment” policy over the 26-year mark would prove “ They noted that one Michigan gas company already has been a to curtail services briefly on two occasions because of a manpower shortage. The military’ affairs committee appealed to 4-F's to get into war work after a series of conferences with Hershey and high army and navy officials. i It suggested that all 4-F's who go into war work be reclassitled into 2-A, 2-B or other appropriate deferred groups. The others probably would be considered available for whatever type of compulsory service that congress may approve. Thus, the 4-F classifieation would eventually be eliminated except for those whose disabilities make them non-employable.

Want to Do Their Part

Rep, John M. Costello (D. Cal), chairman of a military affairs subcommittee on draft deferments, said 4-F's were being given a chance to go into essential work voluntarily because a large part of the estimated 1,000,000 in non-war work are showing that they want to do their part. He said only men under 26 are being asked to report to draft boards at this time, but as those lists are completed and 4-F"s are absorbed into needed occupations, other age groups will be asked to
